Kanye West during a nationally broadcasted hurricane Katrina relief telethon once declared that the nations President, George Bush Jr. “doesn’t like Black people.” When the words finished leaving his mouth I felt proud to be Black! Finally someone who was young, Black, and cool stood up for us all and made a statement that resonated with Black folk because we all to some degree felt what Kanye said because we were thinking it. Up until that point I was on the fence about Kanye and I only loosely listened to him, but after that night he made me a bona fide fan! I have since followed his musical trajectory from just another dude on the Roc-A-Fella roster to undeniable hip-hop superstar. The appeal of Kanye West has always been his uncanny ability to inject truth about serious matters into his rhymes with humor and style. To watch someone I looked up to for his raw honesty, as he devolves into this whiny, nonsensical, rant-making attention whore of coon like proportions is just tragic. How do you stand for the Black community and then turn around and give a white European man, Jean Touitou, founder of French clothier A.P.C. carte blanche to make a “Last Niggas In Paris” clothing line inspired by your similarly titled song “Niggas In Paris”? How do you go from “New Slaves” denouncing corporations for their exclusionary practices against people of color and then turn around and give your blessings on something so blatantly racist is beyond me. At least Clayton Bigsby was blind, what’s Kanye’s excuse?
